Offside Interpretation Change – Coaches’ Edition

As mentioned at tonight’s coaches’ meeting, below is an edited version of a monthly video podcast produced by the Minnesota State Referee Committee regarding changes in the interpretation of Law 11 – Offside. About 10 minutes of referee-specific information has been removed leaving behind just a presentation on the change in interpretation and several relevant video clips

Law 11 – Offside – Required viewing for Spring 2015 season

At tonight’s JUSA referee meeting, we watched a video produced by the Minnesota State Referee Committee regarding implementing the 2013 changes to Law 11 – Offside, specifically about how a deliberate play by a defender negates the offside position of any attackers.

Everyone MUST watch this video prior to spring season.

We have discussed the offside changes at several previous meetings and have shown many clips and examples.  This podcast is well-produced and gives a very clear explanation of how the slight changes in wording from July 2013 affect the way referees, and assistant referees, must judge offside.

In the past, we have put off instituting this change, but starting with our Spring 2015 season, JUSA referees are expected to implement this interpretation of offside.  Instructors at other referee associations throughout Cal South will be carrying the message to their referees as well.

If you didn’t attend tonight’s meeting, or if you did and just want to re-watch the video at home with better sound, here is a link to the Minnesota State Referee Committee’s podcast for December.

Level 3 and higher referees may now sign up for games.
Level 1 and higher referees may start signing up on Friday, August 29th at 5:00pm.
Level 0 referees may start signing up on Sunday, August 31st at 5:00pm per the usual schedule.

Brendon Garabito will be assigning the U16/U19 games as usual.  Contact him with your availability if you are interested.

New Referee Training

JUSA will be training new referees during the JUSA Friendship Games on August 16th.

If you are a new referee and ae interested in refereeing for JUSA this fall and have not received an email in the last couple of days, send a message to referees@jusa.org so you can be added to the distribution list.

There will be additional training on August 23rd, but August 16th is the preferred date as those games are higher level and better for new referees.

Playoff sign-ups for 5/17 & 5/18

Schedules are now loaded for Semi-Finals on Saturday 5/17 and Finals on 5/18.

Level 3 and Level 4 referees (and associated family members) may sign up now.
Level 2 referees (and associated family members) may sign up starting at 5pm on 5/9
Level 1 referees (and associated family members) may sign up starting at 5pm on 5/10
All level restrictions will be removed at 5pm on Sunday, 5/11 when Level 0 refs would normally be able to sign up.

There are six games at many fields on Saturday 5/17. Remember, FOUR games is the maximum, per referee.

If you sign up for finals on Sunday, please try to do a different division/pool than you sign up for on Saturday, for semifinals, where possible.

May 17/18

Playoffs will be the weekend of May 17th and 18th. Within the next week or two, at least 40 games will be added to the schedule on Saturday May 17th, as semifinals for U9 through U19 in addition to at least 20 finals on Sunday May 18th. Teams will be seeded after their games on May 11th.

There are already U7 and U8 games on the schedule for May 17th as these teams do not participate in playoffs. Only sign up for the U7/U8 games if you intend to stay on them. Do not fill those games and then ask to drop so you can move over to U9 through U19 playoff games. The playoff games will be added – just be patient. There will be special sign-up restrictions put in place, once the schedules are released, for the higher level referees to sign up first.
